A great game with lots to offer!
Hello everyone, today I will be reviewing mario sports mix, which despite the name, also features the company of square enix as well as a few square enix characters which adds some variety to the game. This game came out in 2011 and it features 4 main sports to play, it includes dodgeball, basketball, volleyball and hockey. In addition, it also features a story mode as well as several mini games to play. There are also a number of different modes to play for each sport, which I will cover.

The graphics of this game are pretty much what I would expect from a wii game, they are fairly well designed and there is a good amount of detail put into all of the characters. Along with that, the stages are also well put together, the vibrancy and blend of the colors are what really sticks out the most in this game. Altogether, it doesn't look rushed..everything looks as if a good amount of time and effort were dedicated to the graphics, as well as the characters and stages which all look reasonably realistic, thus I scored the graphics of this game a 9.

The sound of this game is one of its more noticeable features, the sounds made when you serve or hit the ball, or skate on the ice rink, all sound very lifelike and real which is one of the prime reasons why I scored the sound so high. Music wise, all of the stages feature their own special or catchy soundtrack/ tune which makes things interesting and also brightens up the game experience while playing. There are also some mini games that you can play, one of which requires you to serve volleyballs in order to complete each note to the song and a lot of the mini game songs are pretty well known. Overall I scored the sound a 9.

As far as re-playability goes, I would say that this game is fairly replayable, you can unlock new characters and also go to a different level of difficulty each time you go through the tournament mode which can make things a little more challenging. There is also a sports mix mode which basically features challenges that can be either one of the 4 sports, so once you beat all of the other sport tournaments, you can earn this one which plays the same as the others, just with all the sports chosen at random. Even after you unlock everything though, it is still a fun game to play, even if it is something simple like playing an exhibition match against a friend or the computers. It isn't a very long game to beat, it should take maybe a week to two weeks max in order to get everything. While I don't think I would put this game high up in addictiveness like pokemon for instance, it is still reasonably re-playable which is why I scored it a 7.

This game does feature simple story-like parts like how the games were discovered and also a small plot when playing tournament mode. Basically it starts off with Toad in the mushroom kingdom smelling flowers and then he notices the sky gets dark which is followed by a crash. He goes to check it out accompanied by the other toads, and together they uncover the 4 crystals for each sport, (blue being hockey, yellow-dodgeball, red- basketball, green- volleyball). After making this discovery the toads decide to make tournaments for each one of the new sports. There is also a part at the end when you are playing the star cup when you face off against your final competitor, the star ship appears and it turns out that your opponent is actually ninja in disguise, and from there he takes the trophy and gets on board the star ship. From this point it is up to you to follow them and get your hard earned trophy back! In order to do that, you must defeat them in a game depending on what game you are playing, and once you beat them, you receive the crystal which you use to go back home. Also, once you have collected all four of the sports crystals (which would mean beating the final fantasy team at all four sports), you will face off against the final boss, behemoth. You can also face off against Behemoth King which is basically a more difficult version of Behemoth by gathering all the crystals while playing through the sports mix tournament which comprises of all four sports. Overall the game features little story tidbits throughout playing, but it really isn't anything complex or special, therefore I scored it a 6 overall. Pretty basic for a storyline, but it's better than nothing.

This game does offer a decent amount of stuff to do, you can play in either a simple exhibition mode which is just one game with x number of players facing off against each other in that sport. There is also a Tournament mode that features 3 different cups that have challenges for that sport, each one being more difficult than the last, all up until you face off against the final fantasy team. If you find the tournament mode to be to easy, you can adjust it however you want, and you can also unlock a various number of characters and mini games. But the way you unlock a character is strange, say you play 20 games with black mage in dodgeball, then you will unlock him in his red outfit, but it is only for that sport you played 20 games in, so if you wanted to get him for all 4 sports, you would have to play as black mage 20 times for each of them. Altogether the game isn't one that should take a long time to beat, and it does have a good amount of stuff you can play, like the mini games for instance which are actually kind of fun. For the most part this game has decent depth to it, so I scored it a 7.

The game concept itself isn't very difficult, each of the sports are fairly easy to pick up on and its pretty easy to get acquainted with the controls, and if you are struggling, you can keep practicing or you can watch the tutorial video for that sport which I think comes in pretty handy if you are really in a pinch. Aside from that, the tournament mode is also fairly simple, and it is adjustable, you can select from easy, normal, or hard difficulty prior to entering the tournament. All that's left is the mini games which are all very easy, and they each have their own variations and levels of difficulty. As far as controls go, the majority of them are basically just swinging your wii remote, or holding down/ tapping a button while doing it, it's not hard to learn, but you still have the tutorial videos if you should ever need them. I'd say for the most part this game is for anyone, there really isn't a lot of skill needed to play, and once you start playing, the controls will become second nature due to their simplicity combined with the relatively uncomplicated gameplay, I gave the overall difficulty of this game a 4.

Total: 7.8/10

Despite the rating, this is still a good game, it is fun, simple, and easy to pick up on for people who haven't played it before. Honestly though this game is even more intoxicating to play with friends, simply because it is more multiplayer oriented, from the mini games to the tournament/exhibition mode. I highly recommend this game for those that like mario games, or for those of you that are in search of a good game to play with friends.

In short, I always have a great time playing this game, and I can safely say it is worth a try to those who like sport/mario games.

I know! I play dodgeball and basketball the most though. But dodgeball especially, I'm at like 600 games. But they are all fun and I enjoy the tournament mode just as much!
